At ArtStreet I came across an issue of National Geographic from right before the CIA-sponsored coup in Chile in 1973. I was captivated by the young woman protesting on the cover. I was moved to create this piece as a tribute. I'd read House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, who was the niece of the deposed president, Salvador Allende. It's a beautifully written magic realism novel and depicts what happened through a family tragedy. This is one of the few political pieces I've done. The theme is still relevant because the US continues to interfere in the democratic process of Latin American countries. Most recently in Venezuela. This piece is a collage with found objects in an inverted wood frame. Titled "Spirits of '73."
